A new trailer for Nia DaCosta’s the candy man shows the bloody return of the urban legend of the same name. Starring Watchmen Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and WandaVision‘s Teyonah Parris, the candy man is a reboot of the 1992 cult classic of the same name with a new twist. The film will address issues such as gentrification and generational trauma through the lens of the urban legend about a man with a hook for a hand. If someone dares to say his name five times in a mirror, he will appear. That’s where things get tricky for Mateen II’s Anthony McCoy, a visual artist obsessed with legend.
Parris plays Brianna Cartwright, Anthony’s art gallery director girlfriend, who is forced to watch her desire to turn urban legend into art bring the gruesome story back to life. Colman Domingo, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tony Todd and Vanessa Estelle Williams complete the cast. the candy man is the second major feature film as director of DaCosta after her work in 2018 Little woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. Now, ahead of its August release, Universal has unveiled a new trailer and poster for the the candy man. The clip begins with Domingo’s William Burke describing the legend at the center of the film before warning Anthony McCoy that “stay away. “Naturally, Anthony ignores the warning and tells his girlfriend that he “You really feel connected to this story. “This connection seems to lead him down a dark and bloody path, one that will revive the legend and terrorize a new generation of Chicagoans. the candy man It was originally scheduled to be released on June 12, 2020, but pandemic-related delays brought the film to 2021. DaCosta made it clear that he wants audiences to see the film together, not just for the common experience of watching a movie. with an audience, but because one of the most prominent themes of the film is the community. That’s shown in this latest trailer, one that seems to encompass the expansive cast and how the titular killer will go after everyone involved.
Fortunately for DaCosta, theaters seem to be slowly recovering from last year and audiences seem to be eager for horror. A quiet place, part II broke box office records during the pandemic during its opening weekend in late May. Similary, The spell: the devil made me do it attracted a considerable amount during its first weekend. With the candy man Arriving much later in the summer, it seems likely audiences have gotten used to being back at the movies by this time and, if the trailer is any indication, a bloody and exciting ride awaits.
