Director Chris McKay has described his At night screenplay for the film as a primal revenge story in a recent interview while discussing his newly released film The war of tomorrow. McKay has been attached to the film since it was reported to be in discussion with DC and Warner Bros in 2017. However, there has been no official news on the project since then.
Nightwing, also known as Dick Grayson, first appeared in DC Comics in 1940 as Batman’s sidekick, Robin. A member of the acrobat’s family, The Flying Grayson, Dick’s family was shot while on stage, and he was adopted by Bruce Wayne / Batman, who took him on as his ward. Since then, he has become a key player within DC Comics, first as Robin and then assuming the mantle of Nightwing as he struggled to step out of Batman’s shadow. The character even briefly served as Batman from 2009 to 2011 after Bruce Wayne apparently died. While the Robin version of the character has appeared in many different movies and TV shows, Grayson’s earlier version of Nightwing is less familiar to a wider audience. He most recently appeared on the TNT series. Titans where Grayson, played by Brenton Thwaites, adopted the mantle at the end of season 2.

While talking to Variety about The war of tomorrow McKay talked about his idea for the At night movie, describing it as a story of revenge and a story of father and son. He also stated that the script was “primitive and reduced and like a real red meat movie in the best way.”McKay’s full statement can be read below:
“Nightwing” is still a movie that I really want to do. I love the character of Dick Grayson when he was a young adult, turning into his own kind of superhero character. That was going to be a father and son story and also a revenge movie, so I was very excited because there is a lot going on in that script. It was going to be really primitive and downsized and like a real red meat movie in the best way. “
McKay has been more than vocal in his desire to do At night, but He added that it was not a priority for Warner Bros. and DC when asked if there was any progress on the project. However, the director has not given up and hopes that it will be resumed sooner rather than later. In his own words, it would be his “Favorite thing to get out of all these things.” Mainly known for his animated work on Robot chicken Y The Lego Batman movie, McKay’s recent leap into directing live-action movies may help show that he is capable of not only managing a highly respected property like Nightwing, but also creating a more serious and mature story.
Considering the darker approach of the DC Extended Universe, as well as the upcoming Matt Reeves The batman which seems to follow in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, a “primitive and reduced” At night The movie could be a perfect fit. That said, the DCEU has also faced some criticism for its more fearless take on its superhero properties, so Warner Bros. may be waiting to gauge fan reaction to Reeves’ movie before moving on with anything. Warner Bros. greenlit a solo Batgirl movie in May, so it’s also quite possible that the studio is looking to branch out and explore other members of the Bat-Family. If yes then At night it would be one of the most obvious options on the table for the studio, and McKay’s script sounds more than engaging.
