Eddie Murphy Stopped Acting After Getting Worst Actor Razzie Award

Eddie Murphy says he stopped acting for an extended period thanks to the many Razzie Awards he received during a low point in his career.

Actor / comedian Eddie murphy says he stopped acting after receiving the Razzie award for worst actor. The iconic star ruled the 1980s as one of the world’s most recognizable and hilarious comedians, but as the years passed, Murphy’s profile began to change from a foul-mouthed sensation to a family man who plays it safe.

In addition to taking on roles that didn’t exactly push the boundaries of the type of comedy for which he was known, Murphy seemed determined to play various roles. This could be the result of having been so successful with the concept during Coming to america, a movie that saw Murphy star in at least four different characters. Over time, Eddie Murphy’s career entered a low point, which did not go unnoticed by critics or the annual celebration of disgrace known as The Razzies. In fact, as Murphy told Marc Maron in his Wtf Podcast, Murphy admits that the embarrassment of receiving the award for worst actor of the decade from Razzie in 2010, as well as other Razzie awards throughout the years, had left him feeling like it was time to take a break from acting:

“I was making shitty movies. I was like, ‘This shit is not funny. They’re giving me Razzies … Motherfuckers gave me the “worst actor ever” Razzie. [So I thought], ‘Maybe it’s time to take a break. I was just going to take a break for a year, then all of a sudden six years go by, and I’m sitting on the couch, and I could sit on the couch and not get up, but I don’t want to. the last pile of shit they see me do [to be] nonsense * t. The plan was to do ‘Dolemite’, ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘Coming 2 America’, and then do stand-up and see how I felt afterwards. At least then they’ll know that I am [still] funny.”

Although Murphy never received the worst actor award in Hollywood’s long-running celebration of worst rate, he managed to rack up nine Razzie nominations throughout the 2000s, a statistic that no actor really wants to claim. But as time passed, Murphy gradually began to find his way back to some worthwhile productions. His turn in 2006 Dream girls landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but it wasn’t until 2019 that fans really felt the Murphy of yesteryear had returned. My name is dolemite found instant acclaim, possibly giving him the confidence to revisit Coming to america and the concept of playing numerous roles with the newly released Coming 2 America.

At present, it does not appear that Eddie Murphy Coming to america The sequel is a huge critical hit, but it’s good to see it at work again. Ultimately, what Murphy fans really want to see, though, is a comeback to stand up. His stand-up performances rank as some of the best of all time and for anyone who loves comedy, it’s hard to top what Murphy has to offer.
