Eternals Wastes The MCU’s Strongest Characters

Eternals focuses on the titular immortal beings, but despite its vast level of power, the movie unfortunately rips off the strongest.

Warning! Marvel spoilers Eternal.

Marvel Eternal brings some of the most powerful characters in comic book history to the big screen, but the movie, unfortunately, still ends up letting down some of the galactic gods. The film focuses on the titular team of ageless and immortal beings placed on Earth by entities known as the Celestials to guide humanity’s progress. Eternal It has a large scale and undoubtedly the broadest historical scope of any MCU movie to date. However, there is a key area where it falls short.

Eternal includes the characters Ajak (Salma Hayek) and Gilgamesh (Don Lee), two of the most immensely powerful beings in Marvel Comics. The new movie gives the public a taste of what each of them is capable of, but the problem is that it is only a sample and not much else. In the comics, Gilgamesh is believed to be physically the strongest Eternal, while the mighty warrior Ajak may be the most powerful of all. Their respective levels of strength and stamina are gigantic, and both are wasted in the new movie.

Hayek’s Ajak is particularly underused. Despite being the leader of the Eternals, Ajak’s role is relatively minor. He is primarily shown in flashbacks of the Eternals overlooking humanity in ancient times, helping Angelina Jolie’s Thena fight her mysterious illness and debating whether to adhere to her rule of hands-off. When Ajak decides to lead the Eternals to prevent the Doomsday Emergency, Ikaris (Richard Madden) throws her at the Deviants, preventing the film from fully showing what the character could have done in the climactic final battle.

Similarly, Gilgamesh is also killed by Kro (Bill Skarsgard), and the movie doesn’t give a complete picture of the force he exerts. It’s also shown in flashbacks to the long history of the Eternals on Earth, and it’s true that there are some decent displays of their power both past and present. Still, for a character who can lift 100 tons and supposedly go toe to toe with the “Mad Titan” Thanos in a physical battle, Eternal It doesn’t paint the epic depiction of Gilgamesh that many fans were expecting.

With the deaths of Ajak and Gilgamesh in the new MCU entry, they unfortunately don’t have the same opportunity to wow audiences with their abilities as some of their fellow Eternals. However, with the suspenseful ending of Eternal, they will surely be seen again in the future, with the post-credits scene poking fun at Thanos’ brother Eros (Harry Styles) and Black Knight (Kit Harington) as potential allies on their next adventure. Hopefully, there will also be a resurrection item in play for Ajak and Gilgamesh, so they get a chance to really show what they can do.
