Marvel villain Fin Fang Foom won’t appear in next Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten ringsconfirms star Simu Liu. Later this year, Liu will make his long-awaited debut as the MCU’s own Kung Fu Master, Shang-Chi. The Kim’s convenience star was cast in the role in 2019, and the original plan was to Shang-chi debut in theaters earlier this year. That will not be the case. As part of a function of NBC News about Shang-chi, Liu denied the rumors that Fin Fang Foom will have a role in the film. While discussing the importance of Asian heroes, Liu added that to avoid “some questionable elements of the source material. “It helps create a positive representation. Fin Fang Foom, who many have noted has a rather racist name, is one of those questionable elements.
Shang-chi will find the titular hero being drawn into his father’s (Tony Leung) criminal enterprise, something he has long tried to distance himself from. In the comics, Shang-Chi’s father is Fu Manchu, who is just as troublesome as Fin Fang Foom. The decision to make his father Wenwu, also known as the Mandarin, one of the examples of how Shang-chi he’s trying to get away from stereotypical representations in comics. Leaving Fin Fang Foom out is another way, and while some comic book fans may be disappointed not to see the dragon, it’s probably for the best.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be a dragon of some kind in Shang-Chi, since one of the LEGO sets in the movie has caused the presence of one during a battle. It’s just that it won’t be Fin Fang Foom. Shang-chi It’s a huge step forward for the MCU in terms of rendering, and it’s good to see that director Destin Daniel Cretton and his team have taken this seriously. Today there is no place for questionable past representations in the MCU; it is better to go ahead and create something really good.
