Kong wielded an impressive ax in Godzilla’s climactic battle against Kong, and screenwriter Max Borenstein discusses the weapon’s backstory.
Warning: this post contains spoilers for Godzilla vs. Kong.
Godzilla vs. Kong Screenwriter Max Borenstein explains the origin of the iconic monkey ax from the film. MonsterVerse’s biggest installment arrived last week on both HBO Max and in theaters, and so far it’s proving to be a hit. In the early days of its launch, Godzilla vs. Kong posted the best numbers of the pandemic at the box office, and it remains to be seen how big it was on HBO Max. Yet audiences are coming to see the biggest and most enduring monsters in cinema clash. Godzilla vs Kong It also received generally positive reviews, with many praising the action above all else.
Godzilla vs. Kong He finds his main characters in interesting places, as the first is furious unlike anything he has done before, and the second has been taken from his home to lead the explorers to the Hollow Earth. It is there, in that mystical world in the center of the planet, where Kong discovers his true origins. In addition to seeing evidence of his past family, Kong discovers an ax that proves to be his primary weapon in the final fight against Godzilla.
Screenwriter Borenstein gave an in-depth explanation of where the ax came from in a new interview with Collider. When asked if he, along with co-writer Eric Pearson, came up with the backstory for the ax, Borenstein first said: “Implicit, but not specifically. He then elaborated, explaining that it came from the ancient race Kong emerged from:
Like me, Godzilla’s scales have this kind of conductive radioactive quality, and the Kongs primates were in some kind of evolved civilization, as primates might, and [used] simple tools, and he had used the backbone of a Godzilla creature to create it. Presumably, there are more like this, but it feels like the iconic scepter of a king. That’s what’s so funny about it.
The ax certainly gave Kong a new edge in fighting Godzilla, and seeing him wield it against Gojira brought an extra level of excitement. Unfortunately, he was unable to secure a victory for her, as in the end, Godzilla was the victor of the battle. However, Kong managed to destroy Mechagodzilla, so it was not a complete loss to the ape. Seeing as Godzilla was armed with his atomic breath, it’s only fair that Kong was given a weapon of his own, one that could even withstand the lizard’s deadly attacks. It’s also interesting to hear how the ax connected with Kong’s ancestors, and how it’s even made from a Godzilla piece.
Godzilla vs. Kong It came about because of the long-standing rivalry between the two, and the subtle touches in Kong’s ax design only deepen that long-standing animosity. Both Kong and Godzilla finished the movie alive, and it remains to be seen if they could ever make it back to the big screen. Odds are they will, although it might not be in another MonsterVerse movie. Regardless of what comes next, Godzilla vs. Kong It gave fans what they had been waiting for and it was certainly worth it.
