Frozen Idina Menzel is opening up about how she felt after John Travolta mispronounced her name at the 2014 Oscars. The Tony award winner is one of the most successful Broadway actors today, having acted in acclaimed plays by the criticism including Rent and Evil. In 2013, Menzel lent her voice to Elsa for Disney. While staying at James Corden’s Karaoke in shared car segment to promote his latest movie, Cinderella, Menzel recalled how he felt after Travolta ruined his name before his all-important Oscar performance. It can be recalled that while presenting her at the 2014 Academy Awards, Travolta released “Adele Dazeem” instead, much to the confusion of both the audience on site and those who were watching the ceremony from their screens. According to the 50-year-old actress, she “I felt really sorry” by herself at first because it was her debut performance at the Academy Awards. At first, I felt very sorry for myself. Like, ‘Meryl Streep is out there. This is my big break and it just screwed up my name. And then eight seconds later, the band starts and I say, ‘Get your things together. Let’s go. This is your moment. Stop worrying about ruining your name. Sing, bitch.
Menzel proved she was a true professional by giving a stellar performance of “Let it Go.” Despite Travolta’s mistake, Menzel insisted that she harbors no feelings against him. In fact, she claimed that since then the actor has communicated with her many times by email and sent her flowers to apologize. While others may be offended if someone screwed up their presentation, Menzel called the entire incident “the best thing that happened“to your career. Cinderella Co-star Billy Porter chimed in to agree, saying the Broadway star became a household name overnight due to Travolta’s confusion.
While Menzel’s Oscar debut wasn’t what she envisioned, Travolta’s hilarious mistake ultimately worked in her favor. Because of that, he gained admirers who were initially unfamiliar with his theatrical work. Now the talented singer and actress is one of the few stage actors to make the transition to mainstream television and film. She reprized her role as Elsa in 2019.
