The cast of In the heights is hoping for a sequel to the hit musical just one day after its HBO Max debut. In the heights is inspired by the life of Lin-Manuel Miranda growing up in Inwood, an area north of Washington Heights with a similar demographic composition of Latino immigrants. He began writing the musical in his sophomore year at Wesleyan University, where he studied film and musical theater.
The musical tells the story of Usnavi, who owns a dilapidated winery and employs his confident younger cousin, Sonny. Usnavi has a crush on Vanessa, but desperately wants to move out of the neighborhood and live in an apartment of her own in Greenwich Village. Usnavi cares for his Grandmother, the neighborhood matriarch who helped raise the local children. His best friend Benny works at the local auto service company owned by Mr. Rosario and dreams of being a successful businessman. Meanwhile, Rosario plans to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that her daughter, Nina, completes her studies at Stanford University.

The cast members, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Jimmy Smits, and Stephanie Beatriz did an interview with Y on the eve of the premiere of the musical film, and revealed that everyone is waiting for a sequel. They expressed that if Miranda ever decides to write another In the heights movie, everyone is on board. Read an excerpt from the interview below:
Even if it takes Lin another 20 years to write the sequel, we’ll all come back … I don’t think there’s anything we like more, Barrera said. But we know that writing a musical is not an easy thing to do, so it all depends on Lin and Quiara being there. If one day you wake up and say, ‘I dreamed the sequel,’ and Lin gets inspired and writes the songs, I mean, we’re there.
The scope of any upcoming movie sequel lies in its success during the first days of its release. There is currently no pre-set script or story as to where the characters will go and the film’s director, Jon Chu, is selected to film the sequel to its success. Crazy Rich Asians next, so it wouldn’t be clear when I’d have time to spend on the pre-planning, filming, and post-production work needed to make a sequel to In the heights exit. The ending of the musical film leaves the story open for further exploration. It has not been revealed whether Miranda and her writing partner, Quiara Alegría Hudes, are willing to build on the success of the film.
The original musical production of In the heights Miranda took four years to finalize and a quick-response sequel seems highly unlikely. However, the idea that the musical’s cast members are so interested in the material that they would be willing to return for a second installment speaks volumes about Manuel’s effect on those who interpret his words and music. Whether Miranda would be willing to go the sequel route remains to be seen.
