The last film directed by Harrison Ford came out in 2008 with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullBut the franchise has been dormant since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The fifth film in the series was officially announced in 2016, but a series of setbacks have left the film in development hell for quite some time. However, things are finally looking to take off, with a production start date projected sometime this summer.
Indiana Jones 5 Director James Mangold, who will replace Steven Spielberg, has begun developing the film’s cast in anticipation of production starting this summer, with Fleabag Star Phoebe Waller-Bridge played the female lead. Spielberg will continue to serve as producer on the film, which is currently scheduled for a July 29, 2022 release date. Mangold continues to fill out the cast of the film and this latest addition should excite fans of a certain cannibal.

Not only did the actor dominate the role of Hannibal Lecter, but he also played the villain in Daniel Craig’s first James Bond outing. Royal Casino, to great effect. Mikkelsen also recently signed for Fantastic beasts 3, taking on the role of Girndelwald from Johnny Depp. Although it can be easy to pigeonhole Mikkelsen as a villain, the actor has shown his ability to play a variety of characters, so it is possible that he could take on another role in the film.
With so much mystery surrounding the fifth installment in the franchise, Mikkelsen could take on any number of roles in the film. One thing’s for sure though: with Mikkelsen and Waller-Bridge joining the cast, and more announcements to come, Indiana Jones 5 is shaping up to be a formidable sequel and a perfect sendoff for Ford’s Indy. It also looks like it’s going to get better Kingdom of the Crystal Skull after many fans felt the fourth film in the franchise faltered under pressure to bring the iconic character back to the big screen.
