James Gunn has more projects on the way DCEU, says the director of DC Films. Shortly after being fired from Disney in 2018, Warner Bros. quickly hired James Gunn to take over. Suicide squad, the independent sequel to the 2016 film that performed well at the box office but was criticized by critics and audiences. Now Suicide squad is slated to open and has received some of the best reviews of Gunn’s career and is currently the highest-rated DCEU movie on Rotten Tomatoes, a stark contrast to the first movie which is the series’ worst-reviewed entry on the site.
Gunn’s schedule is currently very busy. Just finished working on Suicide squad derived series Pacifier which will premiere on HBO Max in January 2022. The director is currently preparing to begin production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Y Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special that will be the last installments of his Guardians of the Galaxy history. After four major projects in a row, Gunn needs to get some rest. However, it appears that he is not done with the DC Universe yet.
In an interview with THR, DC Films president Walter Hamada hinted that Gunn would return to the universe. Hamada talked about how he enjoyed working with Gunn and is always welcome. Hamada said he and Gunn have more projects planned, but did not disclose exactly what or if another movie or series would be. Hamada said:
“Gunn is always welcome, whatever he wants to do. He really has a vision and is a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to return, we are ready for him. He will return. We have more things planned.”
There are several properties Gunn could address next for DC. Gunn was offered the opportunity to make a Superman movie, but passed it on in favor of Suicide squad, and now Warner Bros. has two separate Superman projects planned, so the likelihood of it being Superman seems slim. He also considered directing a Krypto the Superdog movie, but now the super powerful canine will appear in the next animated movie. DC League of Super-Pets with Dwayne Johnson set to voice Krypto. Based on early word of mouth, the studio could be planning a Gunn’s sequel Suicide squad allowing him to incorporate characters that he did not reach in the first film such as Man-Bat and Killer Frost.
Gunn has already confirmed that he has had ideas for more spin-offs based on Suicide squad, so the next project could be a TV show in the vein of Pacifier. Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, Bloodsport, and King Shark would be all that could essentially have their own series. Given Harley Quinn’s popularity, Gunn could work on a project that involves her. Pacifier He’s even set to introduce two new heroes to the DCEU, Adriana Chase, aka Vigilante, and Judomaster. Those two characters have a rich legacy dating back to DC Comics history that, depending on how they are received at Pacifier, it could serve as a springboard for newer projects. What DCEU The project Gunn decides next will be worth the wait.
