Joe Morton believes that the industry should listen to more fan campaigns in the vein of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and give them what they want.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League actor Joe Morton is in favor of more Snyder Cut-style fan campaigns for other films. The long-awaited four-hour cut from the 2017 movie hit HBO Max last week amid a fervor of anticipation, but it wasn’t always a guarantee. Before the confirmation of its imminent release in May 2020, the Snyder Cut had only been whispered about on social media. Stars of League of Justice it fanned the flames, confirming that, in fact, there was a different cut than the theatrical version.
Eventually, Warner Bros. started paying attention and decided to let Snyder finish what he started in 2013 with Iron Man and complete the version of League of Justice that he intended to bring to the big screen. The Snyder Cut was originally going to be released as an episodic event, but it was ultimately decided that the film’s four hours would be delivered in one lengthy play that would bring to a conclusion some of the various threads that Snyder had been seeding since his early years in the DCEU.
An unprecedented fan campaign like the one that prompted the Snyder Cut has never happened before, but Morton, who plays Dr. Silas Stone in the film, thinks it should be happening more often. The actor counts THR that he believes studios should take into account what fans want to see and use it to guide their filmmaking decisions. Morton compares the process to voting and goes on to say that if fans really want to see something, the studios should.
The fact that it generated so much interest that people really pushed on social media to see it, I think this is how it should work a lot. If the audience says, ‘We really, really, we’ve really heard about this, we really want to see it,’ so much so that the studio says, ‘Okay, I think we have to put it together and publish it,’ then I think that’s a great thing. It is like voting.
While the director’s cuts themselves are unprecedented in the least, the Snyder Cut, in particular, represents something completely unique in that category when you consider the various behind-the-scenes issues that plagued the original 2017. League of Justice. What kind of precedent the Snyder Cut sets going forward will be determined as time goes on, but Warner Bros. has already said they have no interest in repeating what they did with the Snyder Cut.
Another DCEU movie, Suicide squad, it’s supposed to have a Yesterday Cut (named after director David Ayer), but the studio has said they won’t release such a thing. However, Morton’s comments raise an interesting question in terms of how involved fans should be in the process of what the studios bring to the big screen. At a time when social media is bringing fans and creators closer than ever, the role of fans in shaping content has grown somewhat, but ultimately it’s hard to determine how much they should actually participate. Zack Snyder’s Justice League It is a completely unique event, but it is unclear how much it will affect the industry in the future.
