Warning: this post contains spoilers for Loki Episode 6, “For All Time. Always”.
A new piece of LokiBossLogic inspired fan art imagine Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes as variants of the Renaissance era. The latest Disney + series has effectively changed everything fans know about the MCU. Loki an alternate version of its titular trickster (Tom Hiddleston) followed after being arrested by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization that monitors Scared Timeline, the MCU as we’ve known it thus far. The show introduced the concept of variants, a person moving away from the main timeline by creating an alternate version of events.
Throughout Loki, Hiddleston’s character interacted with a host of different variants pruned / hunted by TVA. From President Loki to the crocodile Loki, these variants are usually very different in appearance and origin. Yet they all seem to share a propensity to fulfill some “glorious purpose.” Loki’s season finale irrevocably changed TVA’s work, freeing the timeline and unleashing much more than a horde of Lokis on the frightened Timeline. At this point, it is unknown how many different versions of beloved characters audiences will see in upcoming Phase Four movies such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity, Y Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Famous internet artist, BossLogic, recently posted a handful of images on Instagram showing the Avengers members as 15th / 16th century variants. This new piece sees Doctor Strange, Vision, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, Black Panther, and more as Renaissance-era variants. Check it out below:
Presumably, variants of the same being are born at roughly the same time. So it’s unclear if Marvel heroes would have been avenging Europe centuries ago in an alternate timeline, but that doesn’t make BossLogic’s artwork any less remarkable. He certainly plays with the idea that anything is possible in the MCU. In the sixth episode of Loki, the true mastermind (not the Time-Keepers) behind TVA was revealed: The One Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a “pure-hearted” variant of Kang the Conqueror. He told Loki and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) that they have two options: kill him and unleash countless demons or take control of TVA. If the final shot of the season was any indication, the first one already happened.
Loki has launched Phase Four of the MCUThe main fight more than any other entry so far. While Disney + What if? is set to explore alternate versions / variants of key MCU events / characters, to be voiced (mostly) by the original actors, next Spiderman Y Strange doctor the movies seem to hint at the appearance of actors from past Sony / Fox comic book franchises. Whether we will ever see a resurrected Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) donning his mother’s curtains remains to be seen.
