Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner clarifies the aspect ratio of the film, which will air on HBO Max and open in theaters, including IMAX.
This article has been updated to clarify the aspect ratio of the Mortal Kombat movie.
Mortal Kombat The producer of the film confirms the aspect ratio of the next film.. Released on April 16, the long-awaited R-rated video game adaptation is part of Warner Bros. ‘2021 release strategy and will debut simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. This new premiere model has been praised and condemned in equal measure by filmmakers, with Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid admitting he doesn’t know how WB will measure the film’s success.
Still, for some filmmakers, HBO Max has been a massive hit, none more so than Zack Snyder, who was allowed to complete his director’s cut of League of Justice with a budget of $ 70 million for its launch on the streaming service. HBO Max also allowed him to launch League of Justice at the somewhat unusual aspect ratio of 4: 3 you shot it, which means you didn’t have to crop the top and bottom of the original footage you shot. The ratio is strange for modern televisions, as most movies and shows are presented in a widescreen format closer to 16: 9. But it seems that the decision was not limited to just Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Barn, the producer behind Mortal Kombat answered a question about whether the movie would also be available in 4: 3 on HBO Max, similar to Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Although the producer initially tweeted “Yes“In response, he has since clarified that he was confirming Mortal Kombat it will be in IMAX when it opens in theaters. You can see the fan question and Garner’s responses below:
All I said was “yes” to the movie being in IMAX! Mortal Kombat’s theatrical aspect ratio is as follows;
• 2K, span (2.39: 1)
• Imax is also 2.39: 1 without expanded aspect ratio

Given the clarification, it should not be expected that Mortal Kombat will be released in the 4: 3 aspect ratio used by Snyder in his version of League of Justice. This makes sense considering that movies are rarely released in the 4: 3 aspect ratio due to the reach of cinema screens and the prevalence of widescreen televisions in the home. While some people may be interested in watching more movies in the 4: 3 aspect ratio after watching Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the HBO movie Max is likely to be a unique case for Hollywood projects.
As for the launch of Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat in IMAX theaters, that certainly makes sense. Garner and McQuoid have said Mortal Kombat The goal is to be the best fighting movie ever made, and showing it in IMAX theaters ensures that viewers can see it on some of the biggest and best screens out there. While it remains to be seen how the public will react to Mortal Kombat Once it launches, Warner Bros. has made sure there are plenty of ways to watch it, whether it’s at home on HBO Max or on the big screen in theaters and IMAX.
