Mortal Kombat Cut a Scene That Included a ‘Toasty’ Easter Egg

The “Toasty” moment of the Mortal Kombat games is one of the series’ longest-running gags, however its inclusion of the Easter egg in the 2021 film was removed.

The last Mortal Kombat The film adaptation cut a scene that featured the game’s well-known ‘Toasty’ gag as an Easter egg. After decades of installments in the beloved fighting game franchise, Mortal Kombat Fans were excited and a little nervous about the possibilities of director Simon McQuoid’s film adaptation.

Now that the movie has been officially released, the fan verdicts appear to be somewhat satisfied with what has been unveiled. Gone are the 1996 movie’s inclusion of a no-limit fighting tournament as seen in many of the games. Instead, the action centers on MMA fighter Cole Young’s (Lewis Tan) battle to rid the Earth Kingdom from invasion by the Outer World warriors sent by his emperor, Shang Tsung. It’s a relatively new direction for what many fans are hoping will become a solid film franchise, but of course references to some of the better known. Mortal Kombat Game moments are always welcome too. Like any great game franchise, Mortal Kombat has had more than its share of jokes and famous moments that have persisted throughout the life of the extensive series. Incorporating them into the new film was no easy task and, unfortunately, some had to cut themselves on the way.

A particularly durable jaw inside the Mortal Kombat game series over the years has been the inclusion of “Toasty”. The word is pronounced with a high-pitched chirp, while a quick glance from Mortal Kombat Designer Dan Forden appears in the bottom right of the screen every time an especially savage uppercut is landed. The joke first started with 1993 Mortal Kombat II before expanding to other installments of the game. During a recent interview with Polygon, Mortal Kombat Screenwriter Greg Russo explained how the “Toasty” line was originally included as an Easter egg in the new movie, but ultimately ended up getting dropped:

“I worked really hard to get the line ‘Toasty!’ there. He had a place in history that didn’t feel ashamed, like it worked, but [was edited out]. Liu Kang said it after someone was gutted. “

It originated as an impromptu trash talk between Forden and Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon whenever they played the games against each other, it was Boon who was ultimately responsible for Toasty’s inclusion in the actual games. Often misheard by many Mortal Kombat fans for years like “Whoopsie”, “Toasty” is probably one of the best known Mortal Kombat jokes that fans would have liked to see incorporated into the new movie. But as Russo points out, getting the line into the film required finding a point in the story where its inclusion didn’t feel forced or embarrassing. This is probably easier said than done, and while the right time and place was found and subsequently cut, there’s always a chance that it will appear in a Blu-Ray release or director’s cut down the road.

While many fans will be a bit disappointed to learn that “Toasty” came very close to being featured on Mortal Kombat Before being cut, the integrity of the film is first and foremost. “Toasty” is definitely part of Mortal Kombat history, but sometimes even the most beloved little details have to be sacrificed when adapting the material. Cutting the line isn’t important enough to have any kind of lasting effect on the film, despite its long-standing connection to gaming. In the end, a solid movie Mortal Kombat adaptation is really what matters most.
