As the launch of Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings getting closer and closer, Marvel Studios is releasing more and more information about the upcoming movie, including new images showing Tony Leung’s training in Mandarin / Wenwu with the ten rings of the same name. The first Asian-directed superhero movie in the MCU, Shang-chi will see Simu Liu star as the titular hero as he returns to the underground world he thought he had escaped from, and faces both the mysterious Ten Rings organization and his estranged father (Leung).
The launch of Shang-chi was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and filming in Sydney was halted for four months last year. Initially scheduled to release on February 12 (the first day of the Chinese New Year), the date has been pushed back several times and Disney is finally set to September 3. Earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek revealed that the launch of Shang-chi would be theatrical only, possibly in response to Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit about the hybrid release of Black widow The news was met with backlash from fans, who criticized the studio for not offering a safer home viewing experience. and also Liu himself called Chapek for describing Shang-chi as an “experiment”.
Marvel Studios has now released seven new images of Shang-Chi, offering a closer look at multiple aspects of the film. Pictures show Shang-Chi, Katy (Awkwafina) and Shang-Chi estranged sister Xialing (Menger’er Zhang) confronts Wenwu, as well as Xialing seemingly preparing to participate in the underground fighting ring shown in the trailer. Most interestingly, the footage also shows Wenwu demonstrating the skills of the Ten Rings to Shang-Chi’s mother, Jiang-Li, as the pair train together. You can see all the images below:
Wenwu himself is a mostly original creation for Shang-chi. Shang-Chi’s father in the Marvel comics is Fu Manchu, a literary figure with a long history as a racist cartoon deeply rooted in concerns about the ‘Yellow Peril’. The Mandarin also has a deeply troubled history within the comics, but writers Dave Callaham and Destin Daniel Cretton have explained that they sought to make Wenwu a very detailed character and go against what fans might initially expect. Both the Ten Rings and The Mandarin have already technically appeared in the MCU in Iron Man Y Iron Man 3, respectively. But nevertheless, iron Man 3 Mandarin version turned out to be an impostor, with Shang-chi he finally set out to introduce the character who was teased for a long time.
In the comics, Wenwu’s ten rings each come with their own unique powers, including control over fire and ice, manipulation of gravity, and creating vortexes. It is unclear whether the versions depicted in Shang-chi will have similar powers, as Wenwu has been shown to use them synchronously in trailers and visuals so far. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Marvel take some creative freedom with the rings considering they haven’t been afraid to do it with Wenwu himself. Regardless, it will be interesting to see the full extent of these powers and how exactly Shang-Chi can hope to counter them. Fans will just have to wait until Shang-chi launches September 3 to find out.
