Nintendo Plans More Animated Films After Super Mario

Nintendo’s partnership with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment on a Super Mario movie may just be the beginning of more projects.

Nintendo is planning more animated movies later Super Mario. Nintendo has been one of the most beloved video game developers in the history of the art form and its vast catalog of characters includes its mascot, Mario, along with other famous characters such as Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Link, Samus, and Kirby, just to name. a few. Yet even though these characters are pop culture icons, very few have made the leap to the big screen.

Nintendo has protected its characters since the film adaptation of Super Mario Bros. in 1993 it was a critical and box office bomb. Since then, apart from Pokemon franchise, none of the Nintendo properties have received the big-budget treatment. However, in recent years, the company has started to be more open to having its characters appear in the film, with Donkey Kong being a major piece in the 2015 Adam Sandler film. Pixels. Now it seems like it’s more than a one-time collaboration. In an interview with Fast company, Shuntaro Furukawa, global president of Nintendo, stated that they are looking to make more animated films than just Super Mario. Furukawa doesn’t say which characters they are watching, but reiterates how the studio remains protective of the characters. Furukawa said:

“Animation, in general, is something that we are investigating, and not just this franchise … Although the ways we are expanding our IP are increasing, we are very, very careful about where and how our IP is licensed … We are not unfolding our characters and worlds simply to increase public exposure. “

Nintendo is taking a very hands-on approach to managing its various characters, similar to how Marvel Studios was launched as a way to have more of a say in how its characters are handled. With a new theme park deal in place with Universal Studios, it’s safe to assume that Nintendo’s various projects will be with Universal Pictures and, if animated, may be produced by Illumination Entertainment or Dreamworks Animation. Weather Super Mario Currently it does not have a definitive launch date, the projected deadline is 2022, so any other project would be in the following years.

While it is unknown which characters Nintendo has plans for, there are some safe guesses. Earlier this year, Nintendo canceled a series based on Zelda for Netflix due to the news that it was leaked. Given the popularity of the Zelda ownership, Nintendo could take the project to Universal and Illumination. Both Kirby and Donkey Kong have had animated series based on them in the 90s and 2000s, which would make them prime candidates for animated films. Given the enormous popularity of Animal crossing, which could be a priority for Nintendo, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment after Super Mario.
