Zack Snyder’s Justice League viewership figures look impressive, but third-party analysis reveals that only a third of viewers finished the movie.
1.8 million households observed Zack Snyder’s Justice League on its first weekend in the United States, but only a third of those viewers finished the film. The Snyder Cut has finally come true, with author director Zack Snyder’s four-hour movie airing on HBO Max. Now the triumphant fan campaign is understandably turning its attention to restoring the so-called “Snyderverse.” As such, metrics for the film’s performance are being scrutinized to see if Snyder Cut has been a hit for HBO Max.
Streaming services tend to be quite secretive, but fortunately, several impressive data analytics firms quickly compile data to give an idea of the performance of movies and TV shows. Samba TV is usually one of the first responders, and they have revealed that 1.8 million households watched the Snyder Cut in the US during its first weekend. This means that the Snyder Cut was more popular than Hawk and winter soldier episode 1, although it did not exceed Wonder Woman 19842.2 million on opening weekend. That’s not much of a surprise though, given that the Snyder Cut was released on a random Thursday in March, while Wonder Woman 1984 fell during the holiday period. Unfortunately, however, an in-depth analysis of these figures suggests that they are not as impressive as they seem.
In an interview with Sylabdul Inc.Samba TV Director Jeffrey Silverman explained that Samba TV counts as a viewer as someone who has watched more than five minutes of a movie or TV show. That’s far more accurate than some rival analytics firms, which often count a view if a person tunes in for just a minute, but in the context of a gigantic four-hour movie, it’s not a great indicator. When Samba TV checked the Snyder Cut completion rate – that is, the proportion of those 1.8 million households that finished the movie – they found that only 1/3 of the households watched all four hours.
It’s worth noting that this doesn’t necessarily mean that two-thirds of the viewers who turned on the Snyder Cut decided to turn it off halfway. Many households have chosen to look Zack Snyder’s Justice League in installments, dividing it into two or three segments, or maybe even watching one of the six chapters at once. But it certainly means it’s too early to get a measure of the popularity of the Snyder Cut, simply because the display figures themselves aren’t a good metric here. It may be better to postpone the celebration (or the pity) until fifteen days when it is possible to get an idea of how many households finish the four-hour movie. HBO will no doubt be monitoring all of this themselves, curious to find out how good the Snyder Cut was.
This new information also serves as a helpful reminder that data must be put in context to fully appreciate its value. 1.8 million households tuning into the Snyder Cut, behind only Wonder Woman 1984Sounds impressive, until the moment you understand what that data means. The first episode of Hawk and winter soldier It lasted only 50 minutes, which means that it is reasonable to expect a much higher completion rate. Wonder Woman 1984The runtime was just 2 hours 31 minutes, which means that many more households likely finished that movie in one sitting. Comparisons must be made carefully and cautiously, and Zack Snyder’s Justice LeagueActual performance may not be known for quite some time.
