Free boy Starring Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he didn’t want the movie to feature a Deadpool cameo. Reynolds is both the star and producer of the upcoming comedy. Ahead of its release on August 13, it’s already teased that Free boy It will be littered with movie references, Easter eggs, and cameos.
Reynolds first played the lovable antihero Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) in 2016 in the action movie of the same name. Since then, Deadpool 2 and a litany of short Deadpool videos have cemented him as an iconic Marvel character that some may have expected to appear in between. Free boypromised cameos. It will soon launch worldwide after the coronavirus pandemic delayed its planned 2020 launch, Free boy is a science fiction action comedy directed by Shawn Levy (Strange things, This is where I leave you, The internship), starring Reynolds and Jodie Comer in the lead roles. Set in a Truman show-like the video game world, follow an NPC (non-player character) named Guy (Reynolds) who accidentally discovers the truth about his reality as a simulated gear in the gaming machine. After teaming up with a programmer named Millie (Comer), Guy goes on an adventure to save the game world from the destruction of the evil Antwan (Taika Waititi).
Despite the promise of multiple cameos in Free boy however, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Reynolds said he never felt like Deadpool had a place in the new movie, feeling the character wouldn’t fit:
For me, what I like the most about Free Guy is that we are doing something that I think is increasingly rare and very difficult to do in this current market. That it’s a blockbuster movie that’s based on nothing more than an original idea. I mean, it’s not really an IP, it’s not a sequel, it’s not based on a comic, it’s not based on anything. It is based on a concept and an idea that people are familiar with, which is the world of video games. I love that we got that chance, so no, I never felt the need to include Deadpool. He really wouldn’t fit in there. We have some massive surprises in the movie that are courtesy of starting work at Disney. But yeah, no, I never thought of putting Deadpool in there.
No wonder audiences expected Reynolds’ previous character to appear in Free boy sometime. As part of the film’s exclusive tongue-in-cheek marketing campaign, a clip was released featuring the Marvel characters of Reynolds and Waititi, Deadpool and Korg, reacting to the Free boy trailer as if they were YouTubers. This playful short naturally led to speculation that Deadpool would appear in the upcoming comedy, but it appears that will not be the case.
While Deadpool may not be on the character roster to appear in Free boy, Reynolds has prepared the public to expect many Disney-specific Easter eggs. These were likely a later addition to the film, which originally began development at 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the studio and renamed it 20th Century Studios. However, with all of this and plenty of video game references to boot, Free boy is already gearing up to be a fun-packed, summer blockbuster.
