Some might consider the Justice League Snyder Cut an end point, but the movie to be released on HBO Max is far from a dead end.
The new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League has presented the Pandora’s Box that the film embodies. Coming to HBO Max nearly three and a half years after its theatrical counterpart, Snyder Cut is a completely different movie than the one that hit theaters, but that’s just the beginning of its story. Marketing has already shown in clearer terms than ever why Warner Bros.
League of Justice was infamously subjected to a series of last-minute re-filming following Zack Snyder’s departure from the film, which recast it to the point of rendering the film completely unrecognizable from the one Snyder had made. Subsequent efforts by fans to push for the original version of Snyder’s film to be released have made the film a modern Hollywood legend. The fact that Snyder Cut is being released has earned it a permanent place in the history books, but the new trailer for the film shows that the full story of the film is still unfolding.
Reports have emerged that the Snyder Cut is viewed internally as a “dead end narration“At Warner Bros., which some have seen put the lid on any hopes that the rest of Snyder’s envisioned five-movie arc will come true. However, the overall marketing and the new trailer, in particular, tell a story. different. Because the League of Justice The movie the world is about to see can be called in many ways, but by design, a dead end is not one of them.
Following the extremely divisive reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. developed some major doubts about the arc that Snyder had in mind. This led to a rewrite of the League of Justice script that removed some of its more obscure components, including the kernel “scary idea, “which served to put Superman under control of the anti-life equation. Steppenwolf also received a redesign to make it less scary (to his detriment) with a two-hour mandate also imposed on the film, but these changes were not yet “It’s not enough, as the studio executives allegedly doubled the 2-hour, 20-minute cut presented by Snyder.”impossible to see“.
Following Snyder’s departure from the film, further filming was ordered under the direction of Joss Whedon, and Ray Fisher later described Whedon’s conduct on set towards the cast and crew as “rude, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable. ” When the film hit theaters, the changes made to the theatrical version backfired horribly, with Henry Cavill’s CGI upper lip intended to hide his Mission: Impossible – Fallout mustache, becoming a source of ridicule, while the film bombed theaters, and cast members (except for Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa) either left the franchise or its future DCEUs slowly regressed. What all this highlights is that Warner Bros. had made a clear decision to abandon the Snyder arc long before. League of Justice hit theaters, making the release of his version of the film not a start for the studio. Now that the Snyder Cut is available on HBO Max, we’ll see to what extent the movie itself disagreed with that decision at the time.
The first Snyder Cut trailer debuted during DC FanDome, and while it only featured dialogue at the end, it was enough to say that it was presenting a really different movie with a tone and visual style more in keeping with Iron Man Y Batman v supermanand glimpses of characters left out of the theatrical cut like Darkseid and Desaad. The new trailer raises the dial to eleven on how much difference the Snyder Cut represents from the theatrical version. Among the items included in the trailer are a brief look at Granny Goodness, who was never known to be in the movie until now, along with more of Knightmare’s future shown in Batman v superman, shots of Darkseid’s minions gathered before him, the re-implemented design of OG Steppenwolf, and Jared Leto’s recently added Joker.
As well as other additions like the black suit, and as described by storyboard artist Jay Oliva, “unhinged“Superman, the latest trailer for Snyder Cut has done a lot more than just paint a picture of a League of Justice film that is nothing like the one the world has already seen. It also shows that the film expands the universe in which it is set with new characters, settings, and story elements. The Knightmare side of the film in particular is a true wild card, as are the plot elements from Apokolips and Fourth World, while General Swanwick will also be revealed as Martian Manhunter. The addition of Granny Goodness also raises the question of what other Apokolips characters might appear. The Snyder Cut, in short, presents much more than you will ever be able to solve.
The issue Snyder Cut presented to Warner Bros. in 2017 was the fact that the studio had made the decision to scrap Snyder’s plans, and the movie they were holding simply planted the seeds for more. Snyder says the studio remains uninterested in a theoretical follow-up, while the fact that its release comes so late only highlights what the Snyder Cut really is. While many expect the film to act as a final chapter in Snyder’s story, there are other indications that it will set more sequels.
What Snyder Cut will ultimately do is lay the groundwork for the possibility of its story continuing. This also adds to the fact that virtually no other upcoming DC movie is generating the kind of excitement and anticipation that the Snyder Cut currently does. The fact that it apparently doesn’t just wrap up the Snyder arc and end the day highlights the Pandora’s Box that is the Snyder movie.
The Snyder Cut now brings with it a big question mark about what will happen after March 18. Many views Zack Snyder’s Justice League as the final act of its story, but for a movie that puts as much on the table as it will, there will surely be some calls for the story to continue. But will those voices be enough to convince WarnerMedia to fund additional movies to close the story? That same demand for more is what Warner Bros. hoped to avoid the first time around, which is why those elements were removed and the film’s release was suppressed for so long. In the words of Lex Luthor himself, you can’t remove a hood.
