Spider-Man Producer Cried In Anger When Kevin Feige Proposed MCU Crossover

A new Marvel book chronicles the famous meeting between Kevin Feige and Sony President Amy Pascal that led to Spider-Man joining the MCU.

Spiderman Producer Amy Pascal cried when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige first suggested an MCU crossover. In recent years, there have been several disputes between Marvel and Sony over Spider-Man, given that the former owns the actual rights to the character, while the latter owns his cinematic rights. The wall-climbing superhero first appeared on the big screen in the 2002 adaptation of Sam Raimi, played by Tobey Maguire. Although his trilogy sold out towards the end, each installment was an undeniable success at the box office.

After Raimi chose not to return for another installment, Sony decided to reboot ownership with The amazing Spider Man in 2012 starring Andrew Garfield in the title role. After the 2014 sequel was a disappointment, Sony wasn’t sure where to take the franchise next, especially since they were planning multiple sequels and spin-offs focused on Venom and Sinister Six. As a result, they allowed a new iteration of Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, to enter the MCU in 2016. Captain America: Civil War.

Now the recently published book, The history of Marvel Studios: the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, chronicles the famous meeting between Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Sony Pictures president Amy Pascal that led to Spider-Man joining the MCU. Feige went straight out and told Pascal that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 it wasn’t going to work and he suggested, “Why don’t you let us do it?” prompting an unexpected reaction from Pascal. She got excited and kicked Feige out of her office, though she eventually came up with her idea. Read an excerpt from the book below:

“At first, I was very resentful,” she admits. “I think I started crying and kicked him out of my office, or threw him a sandwich, I’m not sure which.” Then he started thinking about it. “By the fifth [Spider-Man] movie, we weren’t giving them anything new. And I have to be honest about it, we were trying to be different, we even went to places to be different that we shouldn’t have. We were no longer fresh. “

Since the book’s release, multiple stories about events that almost had a considerable impact on the MCU have made headlines, such as Robert Downey Jr. almost being cast as Doctor Doom and Joss Whedon wanting to cast Zooey Deschanel as The Wasp in the Avengers. Needless to say, if any of these events had played out like this, the MCU landscape would look drastically different than it is today.

Since Spider-Man joined the MCU in 2016, the creative collaboration between Marvel and Sony has remained fruitful. Despite a brief setback in late 2019, the two parties finally extended their agreement. At the time, it was reported that the new contract allowed for two more films for Spidey from Holland, one of which was Spider-Man: No Way Home released on December 17th. Poison: Let there be slaughter featured a post-credits scene, in which Feige says the two parties worked together, indicating that the other may be a team for Holland. Spiderman and the Tom Hardy symbiote. Holland has recently said, however, that his Spider-Man contract ends after No way home, which contradicts the previous two-movie report and makes the future of the Spider-Man / Venom team unclear.
