Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will screen in a handful of New York City theaters this weekend, six months after its initial release.
By Christopher Nolan Beginning It will open in New York City this Friday, six months after its theatrical release. Beginning entered 2020 as one of the most anticipated films of that year, set to be a great summer tent for Warner Bros. However, its release was greatly interrupted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and Beginning it was delayed several times before WB settled on a September premiere. Despite the fact that most American movie theaters were closed (including key markets), the study went ahead, hoping to give the industry a boost.
Due to a variety of factors, Beginning it raised $ 363.1 million worldwide (just $ 57.9 million domestically), a far cry from the amount it needed to break even. As a result, several studios delayed their upcoming blockbusters even further, with WB opting to move its entire 2021 roster to the HBO Max streaming service. As for Beginning, debuted in domestic media in December, just in time for the holidays. And while the film is widely available to the general public now, WB still hopes to increase the box office totals.
As New York theaters prepare to finally reopen this weekend, Beginning will play in five locations. For Variety, the film will screen at AMC Lincoln Square, AMC Empire, AMC Kips Bay, Angelika’s Village East and Showcase Cinemas Jamaica. AMC Lincoln Square Venue to Host IMAX Beginning screenings from March 12.
Beginning It was obviously not screened in New York during its original run, so this gives New York viewers a chance to see the film on the big screen. Like many of Nolan’s previous efforts, Beginning it’s packed with visually stunning scenes and action, making it a tailor-made experience for theaters. With that in mind, it is easy to understand why WB was so interested in placing it in the largest market in the country. At the same time, this will not move the needle Tenet bottom line and push it towards profitability. It will only screen in five venues, all of which will have limited attendance as part of current health and safety protocols. If anything, this is just a showcase for Beginning on a large canvas.
It will be interesting to see how Beginning performs in New York, especially since it has been in the domestic media for almost three months. At this point, almost everyone interested in seeing the movie has seen it, which could lessen interest in making the trip to the movies. Still, the charm of even looking again Beginning on the big screen it will probably be too difficult for some to resist, so the film should have a relatively strong turnout under the circumstances. WB’s Tom jerry was available on HBO Max and still garnered the second-highest box office opening of the pandemic, so clearly there is still a desire to see movies at the theater.
