The black phone Star Mason Thames reveals that his co-star Ethan Hawke made it easy to act terrified. The black phone, based on a 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill, is an upcoming supernatural horror film from Strange doctor director Scott Derrickson who tells the story of a mysterious masked man known as the Grabber (Hawke) who kidnaps and torments Finney (Thames), a young boy. Outside of his work in the MCU, Derrickson is no stranger to the horror genre with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver us from evil between your past work.
A recently released trailer for the film gives audiences a closer look at the terrifying character of Hawke and suggests that there is much more to the film than just a kidnapping. Finney, it seems, is just one in a long list of disappearances in his small town and a disconnected black phone in his basement cell appears to be the key to communicating with Grabber’s past victims, and his only hope of escape. As with Derrickson, Hawke is no stranger to the horror genre and has starred in Derrickson’s own film. Sinister, and the vampire horror of 2009 Daybreakers.
In a new interview with CBRThames talks about what it was like to work on the film and how he acquired the right mindset to play the character of Finney. According to Thames, acting scared wasn’t really that difficult because, when Hawke was in Grabber’s mask, it was really scary. Check out Thames’ full comment below:
“I’ve always loved acting, and I’ve always had a great imagination. So every character I play, I try my best to do the character justice. I really had to put myself in Finney’s shoes, and really feel what it would be like to be. It’s scary. I don’t know what I’d do. I’d probably hide in the corner all the time. But Finney has to go through a lot in this movie. It was really easy with Scott, and everyone, and Ethan’s acting. It really wasn’t too hard to get so scared when Ethan is in the mask … It was a lot of fun working on it. “
With very solid initial reviews from the few critics who have been able to see the film before, The black phone has the ingredients to be a truly terrifying horror experience. With his pedigree as an actor and experience in the horror genre, Hawke will undoubtedly put on a terrifying performance as the Grabber. The oversized, simple mask he wears is scary on its own, but Hawke’s voice and physicality add another element altogether that feels creepy and makes the Grabber almost uncomfortable to watch.
Blumhouse has a proven track record of producing successful low-budget projects from creative filmmakers and The black phone It certainly looks like it will be one of the studio’s most memorable films in recent years. The film marks Thames’s first ever film performance and his comment suggests that both Derrickson and Hawke made it a very positive experience, despite the film’s disturbing and serious theme. Audiences will have to wait a few more months to see how scary Ethan Hawke is when The black phone launches on February 4, 2022.
