The Great Outdoors 2 In Development From Dan Aykroyd & Original Director

The 1988 John Hughes comedy The Great Outdoors, starring John Candy, will have a sequel by Dan Aykroyd and original director Howard Deutch.

Dan Aykroyd is planning a sequel to Outdoors with the original director, Howard Deutch. Outdoors was released in 1988 and starred John Candy and Aykroyd as in-laws on a camping trip with their families. The film was written by John Hughes and co-starred Stephanie Faracy, Annette Bening, and Robert Prosky.

Candy passed away in 1994, leaving behind a great legacy of comedy classics, from Uncle buck for Planes, trains and automobiles for Space balls and beyond. The comic actor began working with fellow Canadian Aykroyd in 1975 when they starred in the Canadian comedy. Going up Rosie and in the comedy show SCTV. They would later work together on some film projects, including The Blues Brothers, nothing but trouble, and Outdoorsas well as his time on SNL. Candy’s last two movies were Canadian bacon and Wagon’s East.

This time, Aykroyd seeks to return to Outdoors in a sequel called The great outlaws. In an interview with THR, the actor says the sequel would re-introduce Aykroyd’s character Roman running a Ponzi scheme on a federal agent. Aykroyd says that he is looking for someone to take on the role of Candy, although it is unclear if that means it will be the same character or a new character who would be his comedian partner in the film. Director Howard Deutch is working on the idea with Aykroyd, although he has worked primarily on television since 2008, so this would be a return to acting for him. Here’s what Aykroyd had to say about the idea:

“Howie Deutch was a very funny director in the movie. He loved to drive. [John] Candy and me. Howie and I are working on the sequel, called The great outlaws. I am looking for the figure of Candy. There are some really cool names, but I can’t tell who. Howie and I are delighted to bring Roman back as a type of Ponzi scheme that victimizes a federal agent. Who knows? If I find the right partner … “

Deutch was a part of the John Hughes movie era from the beginning, having directed several of his memorable ’80s hits, including Pretty in pink, something wonderful and then Outdoors, all written by Hughes. Deutch’s later feature film credits include Grumpier Elders, The Odd Couple II, The Replacements, Ten Whole Yards, and My best friend’s girl. His television work includes seasons in Empire, True Blood, American Horror Story, and Young sheldon. Deutch is also married to Lea Thompson, one of the stars of Deutch’s. Kind of wonderful, and her daughter, Zoe Deutch, is now a prominent actress in her own right.

Outdoors is a classic 80s-era comedy, from the insane seriousness of the Candy character to the cocky antics of the scheming Aykroyd character, to the subtitled trash-scavenging raccoons and the Old 96’er steak scene. . It’s a period movie and not the kind of comedy that makes its way back to theaters (or streaming) lately, so a sequel creates an interesting perspective. Obviously it would never be the same without Candy and Hughes, but the right comedic partner with Aykroyd could make all the difference and thankfully there are plenty to choose from with today’s crop of talents. Whoever ends up in the role (or if it happens), having Aykroyd and Deutch in the mix will hopefully bring some nostalgia for the silly and heartfelt comedies of that time.
