Doctor Strange will not make an appearance at Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, But there is a good reason for that, according to director Destin Daniel Cretton. The first solo Doctor Strange movie was released in 2016 and although it has been a long wait Doctor Strange 2, the character has appeared in supporting roles in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: infinity war, Avengers Endgameand the next Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings is the first solo origin story for an MCU character since Captain Marvel In 2019, and while the movie seems to carve out its own niche, there are still connections to the larger MCU. The organization of the Ten Rings was first referenced in Iron Man, connecting the film to the first installment of the MCU while The incredible Hulk The villain Abomination appears to have a role in the film. Doctor Strange’s partner Wong will also appear in the film, and that led many to speculate that Doctor Strange could also appear in a cameo.
According to Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings Director Destin Daniel Cretton, Doctor Strange will not appear in the film. In an interview with BroBibleCretton explained that there is a clear reason why Doctor Strange does not appear in the film. Cretton says this was discussed with Kevin Feige and the other Marvel producers and directors. Cretton said:
“All those ‘Where are there people in the universe at this particular time’ types – there are clear reasons why Doctor Strange isn’t there. I wish we could have included Doctor Strange in our movie. But there are very clear reasons why the characters that appeared could appear very briefly, there is also a very clear reason why they are not physically in the room, but all of that is a great conversation with Kevin. [Feige] and the producers and directors who are working on other things. “
There are a number of factors that explain why Doctor Strange may not appear. Since Wong was passing through a portal during the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, it could be that he goes to the fighting ring seen in the Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings trailer, suggesting that the stories of the two films are happening around the same time. The MCU timeline has several stories that overlap with each other, the most recent one highlighted in the Fury’s Big Week story of “What if … the world lost its most powerful heroes?” marvel episode What if…?.
The other big clue could be revealed this Wednesday during the most recent episode of What if…? which seems to focus on Doctor Strange. The episode appears to poke fun at an evil Doctor Strange, and previous trailers have suggested that this Strange collides with another, possibly the main MCU version of the character, and could replace him in the MCU for a while. This could provide an in-universe explanation for why Doctor Strange did not appear in WandaVision. Marvel Studios could have planned it to have this episode of What if…? released the same week as Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings to join the two projects.
