WandaVision Has Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman To Thank For Clever Title

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reveals the source of inspiration behind WandaVision’s title as Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has revealed the source of inspiration behind WandaVisiontitle like Spike Lee BlacKkKlansman. Based on the similarly titled memoir of the same name by Ron Stallworth, the black comedy crime biopic focuses on Colorado Springs’ first black detective as he works to infiltrate the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The film’s cast includes John David Washington in his title role, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Ryan Eggold, Paul Walter Hauser, and Topher Grace.

Developed by Jac Schaeffer, Disney + ‘s first Marvel Cinematic Universe series picks up after the events of Avengers Endgame and focuses on the titular heroes as they live an idyllic suburban life in a world inspired by sitcoms. But as the world begins to crumble around her, secrets are revealed and Wanda and Vision must get to the heart of the mystery of their situation and fight for their family. The story acts as a precursor to the events of the next Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In an interview with Rolling Stone discussing the history of WandaVision ‘s journey from conception to screen, Feige spoke about the thought process behind the Disney + series title. Recalling the difficulties in finding a name that featured both characters without sounding too boring or similar to another Disney + series, Feige recounted the moment he came across Lee’s Oscar-winning film and how it helped shape the title of your series. Read what Feige said below:

“I didn’t want to call the program Wanda and Vision or The Scarlet Witch and the Vision. I was in the AFI [American Film Institute] lunch in 2018 and I remember looking at the board where it listed the top 10 movies and watching BlacKkKlansman. I remember thinking, ‘How cool is that? They just mixed up those two words and the audience just accepts that as a title. ‘ So I thank Spike Lee for making BlacKkKlansman. I know it’s the strangest connection ever, but that’s how it came about. “

BlacKkKlansman and WandaVision

When it comes to sources of inspiration, Feige and Marvel Studios could certainly make it a lot weirder and a lot worse than Lee’s Oscar-winning hit. Given that the franchise is rooted in a comic book story with heroes, villains, and weird-name costumes, the decision to simply put two names together for one title seems like a pretty fair game. Also, if we look at the names that were originally released for the Disney + hit, the final title is definitely a more unique option than the proposed one.

Almost three months since its conclusion, WandaVision continues to prove to be the talk of the town among critics and audiences, especially as the time for the Primetime Emmy Awards approaches, and everyone is looking forward to seeing superhero dramas take their toll at the ceremony. Not to mention, with production underway in the Strange doctor sequel, theories will continue to emerge among fans about what the series finale will entail for the film. However, for those more interested in the film awards season, the lack of nominations for Lee and his cast with their BlacKkKlansman tracing, Give 5 Bloods, it should still hurt a bit.
