Warner Bros. Y AMC Theaters they have reached a 45-day theatrical window agreement. Warner Bros.’ parent company AT&T shook up the movie industry last year when they announced they would launch Wonder Woman 1984, along with the entire day and date of the 2021 movie in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service. This meant that audiences could choose to watch high-profile movies like Suicide squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, Y Space Jam: a new legacy in theaters or at home.
This news was met with disgust by many in the industry, including Warner Bros. CEO Christopher Nolan himself. However, Warner Bros. always said that the platform of the day on the date was only planned for 2021 and that they would return to theaters in 2022, even moving the launch of The batman from 2021 to 2022 so as not to cut through the very lucrative box office that comes with the release of a Batman movie. They previously struck a deal to honor a 45-day theatrical release window with Cinemark, and have now struck a deal with one of the largest theater chains in the world.
According to Variety, AMC Theaters and Warner Bros. have made a deal to screen Warner Bros. films from 2022 for 45 days. AMC CEO Adam Aron made no secret that the company was unhappy when they announced their 2021 release plan for the film. However, they are pleased with Warner Bros. for returning to a theatrical release plan for 2022 and are in conversation with more studies. Read what Aron said below:
“It is especially gratifying that Warner Bros is once again embracing a theatrical window. For us at AMC, it’s especially nice to work so harmoniously with Warner Bros. once again. “
Universal made headlines during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when after the launch of Universal Pictures Trolls world tour Directly to VOD, the company said they would no longer prioritize theatrical releases. Later, Universal and AMC struck a deal similar to Warner Bros. in which they will screen Universal Pictures movies in theaters 45 days before going to VOD. 45 days now seems to be the normal new theatrical window, as Disney currently has Shang Chi and the legend of the ten rings Y Free boy set for the same 45 day theatrical window before going to video on demand.
Warner Bros.’ dealing with AMC cinemas comes the weekend after Suicide squad, which was originally projected to open at $ 30 million, opened below expectations. Since the beginning of 2021, no Warner Bros. movie has released above $ 40 million for a three-day opening weekend. While the pandemic is certainly the culprit, the fact that movies are available on HBO Max at no additional charge should certainly affect your box office. Movies like A Quiet Place: Part II, F9, Y Black widow all opened above $ 40 million in the three-day weekend, and both Warner Bros. Y AMC certainly hopes that audiences next year will rush to see high-profile movies like The batman, Elvis, Y Fantastic beasts 3 On cinemas.
