Zack Snyder confirms that he spoke to Adam Driver about a role in a DC movie in the past, presumably to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder began his time with DC in 2013 with Iron Man, in which the director cast Henry Cavill as the latest live-action version of Superman. He was surrounded by a great cast that includes Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, and Russell Crowe. When it came time to make his follow-up movie, Snyder assembled another stacked cast for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The sequel featured Ben Affleck’s debut as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and featured the rest of Snyder. League of Justice cast with cameos. This allowed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to poke fun at Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s Flash, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. Jesse Eisenberg was cast as the film’s main villain, Lex Luthor and Snyder brought Holly Hunter, Jenna Malone, Scoot McNairy, and many more on board. These actors weren’t the only people considered for their individual roles in most cases and fans spent a lot of time speculating what roles the confirmed cast members would play. A rumor that circulated at the time was that Adam Driver was in contention to play Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing.
Now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is airing on HBO Max, Snyder is answering questions about all aspects of his overview for the DCEU. In a recent interview with MTV News, he was asked about some of these past rumors. Snyder was asked to comment on whether Driver as Nightwing was ever in consideration for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the truth is somewhere in between. He said, “I spoke to Adam Driver about a role, but it was not Nightwing.” confirming that their discussions were about a different role for DC.
Although Snyder did not confirm what role he spoke to Adam Driver about, it is not too difficult to understand. Driver was rumored to be in the Lex Luthor mix before Jesse Eisenberg was cast. Driver is the same age as Eisenberg and was on the verge of becoming a massive star thanks to his role as Ben Solo / Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is possible that the anticipated schedule of Driver with the new Star Wars trilogy is one of the reasons why he couldn’t join the cast of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
After Eisenberg’s unique performance as Lex Luthor, it’s fascinating to consider what Driver might have brought to the role. A major difference from this cast would have been Driver’s ability to make Lex a more physically imposing figure with his 6’2 build. This version of Lex Luthor could literally look Batman and Superman in the eye. Since Driver eventually lost the role and didn’t join Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or another DC project, you probably missed a chance to work with Snyder on a superhero property.
