The screenwriter of Zatanna hints that the movie will be dark and massive in scope. Zatanna is one of the most iconic heroes on the pages of DC Comics and has crossed paths with many characters, including Batman, Catwoman, and John Constantine. As a magical user of the DC Universe, Warner Bros. announced that they were developing a film based on the character.
The studio hired Emerald Fennell to write the screenplay for Zatanna shortly after releasing his movie Promising young woman. Fennell won multiple awards for the Promising young woman Screenplay, including Best Original Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and Academy Awards. Fennell’s background as a writer also includes the hit series Killing Eva so given his background, it seemed like Warner Bros. wanted a writer with a darker sensibility for their magic-based hero.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Fennell scoffed at what he planned Zatanna. Fennell talked about what attracted her to the character and the potential for the movie to be very dark. She spoke about the freedom that is given to the project, given that it is a superhero movie from a major studio rather than an independent movie. Fennell said:
“There are a lot of things about her that I felt could be very, very interesting. And it will be an opportunity to do something really quite dark. And that attracted me, to do something big and scary. [these movies] it is so huge and so exciting. Like, why wouldn’t you want to write something like that when you can write huge, massive, crazy sequences and fights? You usually think, how can I show this in the smallest and cheapest way? [laughs]? Having total freedom to let your imagination run wild is a pleasure. “
By the looks of it, Fennell is staying in tune with what audiences have seen of magic in the DCEU from characters like Enchantress in Suicide squad or the seven deadly sins in Shazam! like a darkest corner of the universe with massive threats to end the world. Fennell is currently writing the script, and the film is in early development with no information on the cast or who will direct. Zatanna. Fennell hasn’t ruled out directing the film, and Zatanna Without a doubt, it would be the most significant project so far for the director.
Launch of Warner Bros. Zatanna as a dark scary movie indicates they view the property as their answer to Strange doctor. Marvel hired horror director Scott Derrickson for the first movie and sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity It was introduced as the first horror movie from Marvel Studios. When Derrickson left and new director Sam Raimi came on board, the entire film was reworked, so little is known about how much of the film still maintains that original horror direction. Since Warner Bros. has already allowed jester, Birds of prey, and now Suicide squad to be rated R, Zatanna could go into the full horror movie aesthetic with its magic and deliver the scares that Strange doctor I couldn’t go all the way.
