(500) Summer Days is streaming on Hulu, and Zooey Deschanel reminds fans that his character is not the villain. The story is a non-linear love story in which Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) reflects on his relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel) after she leaves him. Tom recounts his emotions before and after the breakup, and the story is told from his point of view.
(500) Summer Days was a huge success when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 and became a moderate success at the box office when it opened that summer. The film was received with critical acclaim and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and a Nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While Deschanel had appeared in many films by Elf, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Y Almost famous, it is (500) Summer Days that’s possibly his most iconic film role to date.

Searchlight Pictures, formally Fox Searchlight, distributed (500) Summer Days, so it became part of the Disney catalog, one that was placed on Hulu instead of Disney +. Twelve years have passed since (500) Summer Days It was released for the first time, and Deschanel’s career has grown in the years since. Two years after the film’s debut, he achieved leadership in New girl which lasted seven seasons. She is now configured to host the new version of The dating game, along with Michael Bolton. Deschanel’s performance as Summer remains iconic after all these years, and with new fans likely to discover the movie or have people rediscover it, Summer’s place in the narrative is likely to become another point of contention.
When (500) Summer Days was released for the first time, many critics have been cynical of Summer, seeing her manipulating Tom throughout the film. However, director Marc Webb crafted the movie to be told from Tom’s point of view, and the audience sees Summer as him. What audiences can understand about Summer in the movie is that she is honest with Tom about what she wants. She makes clear her intention with Tom not to want a relationship, and he hopes that she will change. While audiences, seeing the movie for the first time, may have been critical of Summer, many have accepted her role in the movie and now see Tom as the one in the wrong.
